What students love

I used to hate Billie Eilish’s songs, but learning about pedagogy made me appreciate her breathy mix and chest voice. It's fascinating and challenging to achieve.

What fascinates me about Billie Eilish isn’t her range, but how she uses vocal textures, flips flawlessly between chest and head voice, and uses a buttery tone to paint imagination.

Kesha is a surprisingly talented singer. I was blown away when I heard her doing a whistle voice in 'Praying'.

Mariah immediately brought tears to my eyes & chills all over my body just listening to those samples. Absolutely mind-blowing.

The 'Shake It Off' performance is an 'easy' song for Taylor Swift, yet it's still difficult for the majority of other singers, which is crazy.

I admire Billie Eilish for her 'craftsmanship' – rejecting pitch correction and doing multiple takes. Singing quietly without losing pitch accuracy requires immense control.

What a wonderful analysis. Thank you guys!

Love this and Justin's part is pure gold! I'm sick of hearing everything tuned, even 'live' setups are tuned or playback these days.

Jack White is incredible with his ad-libbing and creativity. He never plays or sings a song the same way live, feeling it out in the moment for pure spontaneity.

Mariah is one of the most influential, versatile, and important voices of all time, whose contributions far outweigh any bad performance.

What could be better

You lost me with Beyonce.

She said the reason she can hit the whistle register is because of nodules on her vocal chords and that she learned to sing around them! That’s not healthy at all!
